– Aaron Cheruiyot told mourners in Nyamira county that Matiang’i and the DP secretly met some six months ago
– The senator claimed the CS was at Ruto’s office to seek help in the face of alleged impeachment plot by ODM senators
– Matiang’i told off the senator and clarified he has never been to the DP’s office
– The CS also took the opportunity to warn politicians against spreading lies
Interior CS Fred Matiang’i on Sunday, September 22, openly clashed with Kericho senator Aaron Cheruiyot in front a gathering of mourners in Nyamira county where the two had met to attend a funeral service.
Trouble started when Cheruiyot, perceived to be a close political ally of Deputy President William Ruto, claimed Matiang’i met the DP at his office about six months ago to ask for support when an impeachment motion against the CS was tabled in the Senate.
Addressing the mourners in Borabu constituency, the senator claimed he was summoned to Ruto’s office and found Matiang’i there discussing his ouster motion, which was allegedly filed by ODM senators.
“About six months ago, some people brought to Senate an impeachment motion against CS Matiang’i…And that day I received an angry call from the deputy president who summoned me to his office.
When I got there I found the DP and this CS (Matiang’i) there. The DP then asked me what was going on and I told him it was about an impeachment plot hatched by Homa Bay senator and ODM. I then went back to the Senate, talked to Jubilee senators and the motion was shot down,” Cheruiyot asserted.
And when time for Matiang’i to also address the mourners came, the visibly upset CS was quick to distance himself from the meeting the Kericho senator alleged took place at the DP’s office and told the politician to stop lying to Kenyans.
“I have never been in that (Ruto’s) office, neither have I met him. Let us stop lying in church. The lies people spread in public forums must stop,” the tough-talking Interior CS clarified.
This was, however, not the first time a subject touching on Matiang’i’s impeachment plot was being brought up by the politicians.
The ODM party’s national chairman claimed Ruto’s team was deliberately and maliciously spewing propaganda with an aim of ousting Matiang’i.
Mbadi who doubles as National Assembly’s Minority Leader argued the DP had been unhappy ever since Matiang’i was added the powers of being in charge of all government development projects and was thus looking for an opportunity to fight back.
“Since Matiang’i was added the responsibility of coordinating national functions, the deputy president has been very unhappy and together with his team think they have found an opportunity to fight back, let them bring that motion, we will deal with it accordingly,” he said.
